Thoughts on the emergence of consciousness

Self awareness
There are a couple of questions I wonder about when it comes to consciousness:
Why did it happen?
How did it happen?
These questions are intertwined to some extent. I always thought that after various senses emerged, pain, which is a reinforcing impetus to avoid damage would have emerged next from an automatic reaction to those senses.
Caring about pain would be an important step in the progression from sensing the environment to becoming aware of ones place in the environment.

Is our brain's entanglement with reality what gives us consciousness?
Or at least determines what we’re conscious of.
Is a rock aware of the earth through the attraction of an earth that shares/experiences* the same reality as it. So is entanglement just a shared reality? Is entanglement just an awareness of each other?
* shares/experiences
Another way to say it is [they have a shared experience]/[they experience the same reality]
So is the connection between experience and reality at the heart of the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum physics? You experience the reality that you’re entangled with. You are aware of reality and your place in it.
